On the occasion of LGTBI Pride Day, the PSOE of Lanzarote focuses on the need to continue promoting policies that guarantee real equality, at a time when hate speech is resurfacing and rights that took decades of struggle are being questioned.
“Now more than ever, we have to stand by those who suffer discrimination just for being who they are or loving who they love. We are not going to allow a single step backwards in rights that took years of collective struggle and courage,” said María Dolores Corujo, general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and deputy in Congress.
The Socialist Party recalls that Spain was a pioneer in the recognition of equal marriage, a historic achievement achieved 20 years ago under a socialist government. “Today there are those who intend to extinguish these advances, impose silence and normalize hatred. We are going to continue legislating, working from the institutions to protect the freedom and dignity of all people,” Corujo added.
For her part, the island secretary of LGTBI Policies of the PSOE of Lanzarote, Paula Corujo, has warned that “we are living in a context in which the model of hatred and pointing fingers is gaining ground. We cannot normalize this drift or look the other way. Being a woman, being trans, being gay, lesbian or bisexual cannot continue to be a reason for fear, ridicule or exclusion.”
“Pride is not just a celebration, it is an act of resistance. From the PSOE of Lanzarote we are going to continue building a diverse, free and respectful island, where all people can live without fear and with rights,” she added.
The PSOE of Lanzarote will participate this Saturday, June 28, in the events organized on the occasion of Pride Day, including the reading of the manifesto at 11:00 a.m. at the Casa del Pueblo. An event open to all citizens who believe in a more just, plural and inclusive society.
