The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Water Consortium, continues with the roadmap marked by the current declaration of water emergency in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

“The public administration has to lead by example, especially in a situation of water crisis. Therefore, within the transversal measures included in the declaration of emergency, we have implemented water saving measures in public buildings and facilities. These are small gestures, complementary to the large investments planned, but fundamental in the situation we are experiencing,” according to the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort.

In this sense, these actions are already being applied both in the central building of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and in other external dependencies: Sports City, Island Library, “El Salinero” Theater, Casa de los Arroyo, Casa Amarilla, University School of Tourism of Lanzarote, CIC El Almacén, School of Music, Papagayo Camping Area and in the different Assistance Units dependent on the Island Institution, among other facilities.

Among the actions undertaken are the revision of water supply systems and pressure groups, the location and correction of small leaks, the repair of fire protection systems (PCI) of cisterns, the reduction of flow and opening time both in the taps of the sinks and in the cisterns of the bathrooms, as well as the water cut in the interior fountains of the headquarters of the Island Council.

Acknowledgements to Teguise and San Bartolomé

The Minister of Water of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas, also wanted to take the opportunity to thank the municipalities of Teguise and San Bartolomé for their willingness to implement saving measures in the public facilities of their respective municipalities.

“It is very important that the users of Playa Honda can see that in the showers of the beach there are messages from the City Council in which the responsible use of water is recommended, or that in Teguise they have directly chosen to close the showers of the beaches of their municipality while the emergency lasts. If we all do our bit with actions of this type, the benefit will be for the entire island,” adds the Minister of Water.

Cejas recalls that, in the last meeting of the Assembly of the Water Consortium, the technicians of this entity made available to the municipalities “a draft municipal decree in which limitations are established in the use of water for public services such as beaches or street cleaning. We hope that the rest of the municipalities can also put into practice measures of saving and responsible use of water, as are the municipalities of Teguise and San Bartolomé”.
