The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality has granted a subsidy of 19,215 euros to the project "Life without = Life +", a program of the Cabildo of Lanzarote aimed at preventing the consumption of alcohol and drugs among young people, and more specifically among young drivers. The project will be developed in the areas where young people have drinks and go out, and in events such as popular festivals, concerts or music festivals. It will be done through informative campaigns and recreational workshops, as the Cabildo has communicated through a statement.
The primary objective of this program "is to raise awareness among young people to avoid the consumption of alcohol and drugs, especially if they intend to use the car." The program is divided into two main areas of action. On the one hand, in the vicinity or surroundings of the drinking areas, where graffiti workshops, henna tattoo workshops, photography exhibitions, video and film screenings would be developed. "All actions whose theme and development would be oriented to make participants aware of the risks of taking the car if alcohol has been consumed," the Cabildo has reported.
And on the other hand, actions that would take place within the same bars or leisure venues where young people gather, and that would consist of the distribution of informative material, carrying out voluntary breathalyzer tests and a questionnaire. These activities would be developed by monitors and would be carried out mainly on weekends and the eve of holidays.
The Councilor for Youth, Sports and Road Education of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Migdalia Machín, has expressed her satisfaction for obtaining the subsidy and has stated that "this aid represents a support and recognition to the Road Education programs that the Corporation is developing." Machín has also pointed out that the project "Life without = Life +" will last for "about three months, specifically in July, August and September, and will be aimed at young people between 15 and 30 years old, estimating that it can reach a potential audience of about 30,000 young people".
1,500 visits on the Internet
On the other hand, Migdalia Machín has also communicated that the video made by the Security and Road Education Service for the 2011 Christmas Campaign already exceeds 1,500 visits in the different forums and social networks of the Internet. The spot accompanies the actions contemplated in the projects "Drive without alcohol" and "GPS: Group of Safe People", which is also aimed at young people and therefore has been distributed mainly in social networks.
