The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, held a meeting this Wednesday, September 28, with the residents of Valterra to inform them, three decades of struggle, that the 70 homes of Valterra have been transferred to the Cabildo and the institution will transfer them to each of their legitimate owners.
In the meeting, which was held at the CSC of Valterra at the request of the Negotiating Table Association for the Homes of Garavilla, Rocar and Ojeda, Corujo was accompanied by the senator for Lanzarote, Manuel Fajardo Palarea, the Housing Councilor of the Cabildo, Jorge Peñas, and the new drafters of the Cabildo.
"Justice will finally be done with these families, families of humble origin who for decades have lived anguished by their homes, in a situation of legal insecurity, also suffering serious neglect by the Government presided over by Ástrid Pérez in the Arrecife City Council", said María Dolores Corujo.
"We made a commitment to the families of this fishing neighborhood and we have fulfilled it, because for us the important thing is the facts and not the words", said the senator for Lanzarote, Manuel Fajardo, who contributed to unblocking the "unfair and outrageous" situation that these residents were suffering "after the PP was unable to assume its responsibility".
Finally, the Housing Councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jorge Peñas, wanted to convey a message of tranquility to the affected families of Valterra, as well as express his commitment "to achieve, sooner rather than later, and in compliance with the legal framework, that they be given the deeds of the 70 homes", which until now had been owned by the Social Institute of the Navy.
New Law, thanks to Valterra
In this regard, and after the approval in the Senate of the new Housing Law, which contains an additional provision that grants ownership of these houses to the Cabildo of Lanzarote, the institution has already formalized the acceptance of that transfer. Thus, as the new owner of the homes, it will be able to grant the property deeds in favor of their legitimate owners. It is a new specific law after the study of an anomalous case.
The next step to achieve this goal is to start the necessary procedure to identify them, for which the Social Institute of the Navy has already been requested to send the different files related to these homes.
It should be remembered that the Valterra neighborhood has 200 homes built in 1955 by the Social Institute of the Navy, with the participation of different canneries, for the use of workers related to fishing as official protection homes.
However, although the State handed over 130 to the tenants, a lawsuit was initiated on the other 70 when the three canneries claimed their ownership, so that, until now, the residents have lived in fear of being evicted from the homes and without being able to intervene in them as their legal rights are not recognized.
