The Association of Women Judges of Spain (AMJE), in collaboration with the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Areas of Education and Social Welfare, organized last Friday the first training workshop on equal justice. The activity brought together more than 300 young people who actively participated during the debate, asking questions to the professionals of the multidisciplinary judicial team: a lawyer, a national police officer, a prosecutor, a forensic doctor and a magistrate.
This has been the initial event of the project Educating in Equal Justice, a proposal that will last until May and will end with a practical day in the courts. It will be developed throughout this school year 2024-2025 in the Secondary schools of Lanzarote, and is aimed at students of 1st year of Baccalaureate. Educating in Equal Justice was held for the first time in the 2016/17 academic year, but due to the pandemic it had to be suspended; now it is resumed.
The Minister of Education, Ascensión Toledo, thanked the students and teachers for their presence and willingness to practice equal justice. "This program is a great opportunity to enter the field of justice with a gender perspective and to learn about professional opportunities and their involvement in the sector," she stressed.
For his part, the Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, stressed that this type of activities "allows our adolescents to recognize discriminatory situations, gender violence and sexist stereotypes, in addition to bringing them closer to the judicial world."
The magistrate of the Social Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands, Gloria Poyatos, co-founder of the Association of Women Judges of Spain, has stressed how this program of transformative education in Equality from Justice manages to help thousands of young people understand that "a sexist justice is not compatible with an equal or equitable justice."
Committed students
The educational institutions of Lanzarote attached to this training that will extend for months are Arenas Internacional, IES Altavista, IES César Manrique, IES Las Maretas, IES Costa Teguise, IES Haría CIFP Zonzamas, IES Las Salinas and IES Playa Honda.
This project was already presented in January within the framework of the Board of Vice-Directors and Vice-Director to inform about the roadmap of the initiative, which has three thematic blocks endorsed in equal education.
With this type of actions, the Island Corporation reinforces its commitment to offer young citizens materials and dynamics that facilitate their learning and their future.
