On World Car-Free Day, Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-bc) has cycled through the streets of Arrecife to highlight the use of this type of mobility, which they describe as "more sustainable, healthy and safe."
The Canarist peloton on the way left the Argana Alta neighborhood, going along Tajaraste and Tenderete streets. It passed through the Titerroy neighborhood and ended at the charco de San Ginés. A route that they describe as "high risk", since the urban conditions presented by Arrecife are not suitable for the safe use of bicycles.
The return route ran along what they call the "mini" bike lane on Avenida de Naos; it continued along the Rambla Medular and the Los Mármoles road, going up Donantes de Sangre towards León y Castillo street to, later, take Altavista, Maneje and, finally, end in Argana.
According to the Canaristas, "the coexistence between motor vehicles and bicycles and scooters is made difficult by the little capacity that the city has to offer a common space for both." They go on to point out that "there are practically no bike lanes, and the few that exist are short and do not reach any specific place."
"We fill our mouths with publicizing Lanzarote as a fantastic island for sports; and we spend millions of euros on high-level sporting events; but then we lack the most basic things for the people who live here, such as bike lanes, healthy parks, public recreation and leisure areas," they demand from NC-bc.
Thus, the Canarist organization will continue to demand the freedom of people to move in an alternative way to private and motor vehicles, since both rights must be guaranteed equally. For this, they point out the importance of changing the vision of the urban environment and the territory that today privileges the use of private cars, to adapt it to collective and sustainable transport.
"The present and the future of mobility is increasingly in public transport and in sustainable methods that are less aggressive to the territory and to people's health. Lanzarote has the conditions to bet on and apply these methods, which would substantially improve the well-being of our people," they conclude from the organization.
