Nueva Canarias has requested the removal of the "guardrail" barriers from the road that goes from Tías to La Tiñosa, the LZ-505. The City Council Plenary approved a motion from the formation requesting this measure last July, and, according to the councilor of this formation, Mame Fernández, this same proposal was already presented by himself and approved by the City Council Plenary in 2012. Despite this, according to Fernández's complaint, "to this day, absolutely nothing is known, whether the local government has taken steps and whether the Cabildo has received any notification from the Tías City Council."
In the last motion, dated July 20, NC states that the barriers in the section from the Topes roundabout to the Municipal Nursery roundabout on that road "no longer protect anything, as the margins are at the same level as the road." "We understand that the safety protection itself already poses an evident danger," the motion emphasizes, which also proposes that the shoulder of that road be widened, so that it can also be used as a bike lane and "achieve a Friendly Service Route that connects La Tiñosa with Tías and vice versa."
"Nueva Canarias Tías requests the Municipal Government to take the necessary steps with the Island Council to study this situation and, as soon as possible, proceed with the removal of these barriers, provided that the technical reports see it that way and it does not generate a greater danger for road safety," says the formation in the proposal presented to the plenary, in which it emphasizes that the motion already "was presented by Mame Fernández on February 8, 2012, being approved in the Municipal Plenary."
In addition, in its proposal, NC argues that these barriers "are attached to the ground by steel spikes," which "cause 15 percent of deaths and 60 percent of injuries per year, especially in motorcycle accidents." "The biker community and also cyclists have been demanding the replacement of these barriers with new generation ones, which cover the spikes and cushion the impact in case of leaving the road or accident," they add.
