The Minister of Economy and Finance and president of CC of Gran Canaria, José Carlos Mauricio, stated this Friday that at this time, and together with leaders from other islands, working to propose within the debate of candidacies that exists in an "internal and intense" way in the Canarian Coalition that "the party is renewed, rebalanced and the nationalism is reinforced" on the basis of a single party.
In addition, José Carlos Mauricio advanced that, in his opinion, "if renewal occurs", the candidates for the presidency of the Government in the next elections should be among María del Mar Julios, Manuel Lobo, Paulino Rivero or Antonio Castro.
Regarding the possibility of Adán Martín repeating as a candidate, Mauricio recalled that the current president is 63 years old, and pointed out that it is necessary for the Canarian Coalition to face an important renewal process since, like the Canary Islands, the year 2007 marks "a change of cycle."
Mauricio explained that in a few weeks, already in the month of January, he will present a written proposal in which he explains how, in his opinion, this process of "renewal, refoundation and rebalancing" of the Canarian Coalition should be carried out.
The president of the Gran Canaria nationalists stated again that CC is currently suffering from an imbalance against Gran Canaria and the rest of the smaller islands, since at this time the president of the party, the president of the Government, the spokesperson of the Parliament and the spokesperson in Congress are people from Tenerife. "I am now working so that the four things are each on a different island," said Mauricio, given that the so-called smaller islands, such as Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma, "have reached their age of majority."
Therefore, Mauricio insisted that he is working with the principle that the candidate should be from Gran Canaria, and placed María del Mar Julios in that role (adding that within the framework of the current feminization of politics worldwide, her candidacy would be positive), although he considered that the candidacy for Gran Canaria would be expendable when the four mentioned variables come into play.
TERESITAS CASE AND THE RESURGENCE OF ATI
On the other hand, Mauricio was asked about the effect that the outbreak of the Las Teresitas case and the possible indictment of Miguel Zerolo is having within CC, both in Tenerife and throughout the Canary Islands. In this regard, Mauricio admitted that this case is causing "the insularity of ATI" to resurface and is "resurrecting old ghosts."
In the opinion of the Minister of Economy and Finance, for CC in the rest of the Canary Islands "the resurgence of ATI is negative", and he argued that in Tenerife there are currently two currents, "that of ATI and CC of Tenerife", as there are people who have a regional vision of politics "and others who have remained in insularity." Among those with a regional vision, Mauricio cited Paulino Rivero and José Miguel Ruano.
Therefore, Mauricio made it clear that "CC cannot be governed by the insularists", and announced that "I will fight thoroughly against the insularity of any island within CC." Insularity, the councilor concluded, "is the ally of centralism."
CITY COUNCIL
Finally, Mauricio said regarding his possible candidacy for the city council that "if I can, I will not be a candidate", explaining that CC is currently preparing a survey and that it will depend on the results it offers.
In that sense, Mauricio joked by asking the audience that if they receive a call from a survey asking who they think is the best candidate within CC, "do not answer my name, and say that of Julios, Lobo or Isaac Godoy."
