The senator of the Popular Party for the Autonomous Community, Loly Luzardo, has presented a motion in the Senate in which she urges the Government to initiate, by the Social Institute of the Navy, the procedures to carry out the granting of public deeds to the residents of Valterra. And it is that some houses in this neighborhood of Arrecife are subject to litigation by the old canneries of the island, which now claim their ownership.

The initiative explains how in 1955, the Social Institute of the Navy promoted the construction of 200 official protection homes to distribute and award them among the workers of the sea and the canning companies that were active at that time. Subsequently, these properties were assigned for lease.

Luzardo highlights that, after the assignment to the workers, they have been paying the corresponding rent, the IBI, the current expenses derived from the use of the house, in addition to facing the investments for reform or repairs. The senator of the Popular Party emphasizes in the motion that, during the more than 50 years that have passed, the canning companies had not exercised the option of acquiring the property, with the Social Institute of the Navy maintaining ownership of the properties.

"50 years later we find some canneries already dismantled that litigate for the property and some neighbors who have spent a lifetime in their homes and feel the pressure of a possible eviction", indicates Luzardo.

The PP senator is confident that a solution can be arbitrated if the Social Institute of the Navy initiates the procedures to formalize the transfer of ownership to the residents and their subsequent registration in the Land Registry.
