The inter-island public transport of travelers in Lanzarote experienced a growth of 15% during the past year 2024 compared to 2023. In total, it went from 6.6 users to 7.6 travelers, according to official data released by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the institution on which it depends.
The Minister of the Transport Area, Domingo Cejas, has detailed that for the general bonus of transport, the Cabildo de Lanzarote allocated a total of 8,472,942.21 euros during 2024, with 50% of this cost being covered with own funds of the corporation, while the rest arrives in the form of a subsidy. ”We must be satisfied since the cost of gratuity has experienced an increase of no less than 30% compared to 2023. We do not see this as an expense, but as an investment in sustainable mobility and quality of life of the population”, the minister commented on these data.
The 100% bonus for transport through the Canarian Resident Bonus (BRC) will be maintained in Lanzarote, for the moment, until December 31, 2025.
Looking at the payment method of travelers, it is evident that the Canarian Resident Bonus takes the cake, with an increase of 32.78% in sales, reaching 4.7 travelers (there were 3.5 in 2023 with this bonus). For the first institution, it "seems logical" that this rise has caused the decrease in the processing of the wallet bonus, 44.70% less, going from 344,157 in 2023 to 190,320 travelers last year. Finally, direct payment on Lanzarote's intercity buses remained stable: in 2024, 2,774,213 tickets were issued, 0.43% more than in 2023 (2,762,482).
A global work in terms of mobility
Domingo Cejas has also referred to the work that his Area continues to execute to ensure new improvements, pointing to the new island contract for the next 15 years as a milestone that “will radically change the island's transport network”, he clarifies.
Cejas also recalled some of the improvements introduced in a few months: the reinforcement of Line 62 in the afternoon, which allowed the connection with Playa Blanca from Arrecife every 30 minutes; the opening of new user service offices (one in the Arrecife Interchange and another in the Playa Blanca Bus Station, intended for the processing of bonuses and the recharging of them); the implementation of taxi-bus services in the municipalities of Haría and Yaiza; the works on the new Costa Teguise interchange; or the extension of Line 22 that connects with the Airport, among other innovations. In addition, he recalled the need to continue training and finding new professional drivers to support stability in the provision of the service by the concessionaire.
