The Arrecife City Council, the Lanzarote Water Consortium, and the company holding the concession for the island's integrated water cycle, Canal Gestión, have agreed, in a meeting held this Thursday, to inspect the discharge points into the sea to detect the leak that is contaminating El Reducto beach with sewage and has forced its closure on three occasions.

Since Thursday night and throughout Friday morning, a mechanical shovel and two workers from the Arrecife City Council have dug two holes on the beach to clarify where the leaks are occurring and to stop them.

The objective is to carry out analyses at these two points and confirm if the leaks are occurring from Avenida Fred Olsen and not from the pipelines at Punta del Camello

According to the Lanzarote Island Council's Water Councilor, Domingo Cejas, a cleaning of the channel will also be carried out "to leave it in perfect condition".

El Reducto beach has suffered several weeks of intermittent closures due to sewage contamination. The longest closure forced a ban on swimming at the main beach of Lanzarote's capital for 14 days. It then reopened for four days and has now been closed again for the same reason.
