The Cabildo of Lanzarote has begun a new edition of the project Teatro que cura (Theater that Heals) this week, an initiative that uses the power of theater as an educational tool to promote healthy relationships and prevent gender violence among adolescents.
The program, promoted by the Comprehensive Women's Care Service (SIAM), which reports to the Area of Social Welfare and Inclusion led by Councilor Marci Acuña, will reach more than 850 ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) and Bachillerato (Baccalaureate) students from different educational centers on the island this week. This Tuesday's meeting, like the rest of the week, has taken place at the Casa de la Juventud (Youth Center) of Arrecife, in mornings of reflection and youth participation.
"The Cabildo develops a comprehensive prevention policy in this area, but during the month of November we have a special sensitivity around the International Day Against Gender Violence," said the Councilor for Social Welfare, who was present at the event. "Projects such as Teatro que cura seek to change the erroneous patterns that young people assume about relationships, promoting more egalitarian and respectful bonds."
Marci Acuña recalled that there have already been 39 women murdered in Spain so far in 2025, a figure that "shakes us and forces us to continue educating in equality from an early age."
Theater as an antidote and the rest of the program
From November 3 to 7, the program Teatro que cura (Theater that Heals) offers daily sessions aimed at students in the 4th year of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education) and 1st year of Bachillerato (Spanish Baccalaureate), as well as training cycles and Basic Vocational Training. The performances, which take place in the morning, include an afternoon session this year on Wednesday the 5th to facilitate the attendance of students with afternoon schedules. The project is promoted by the Asociación Teatro que Cura (Theater that Heals Association).
In addition, a day of women's Canarian wrestling is planned for November 15: Mujeres de arena y fuerza (Women of Sand and Strength), at the Terrero de Tías. This event highlights the role of women in the tradition of Canarian wrestling, promoting visibility, participation, and gender equality in sports.
Also, on November 19, 2025, the monologue Eso no es sexo (That's Not Sex) will be held. Marina Marroquí, Social Educator and specialist in Gender Violence, will offer this workshop aimed at 4th year ESO students in the Assembly Hall of the Cabildo de Lanzarote. The activity aims to prevent and detect sexual violence in adolescence, especially that related to pornography and myths about sexuality. Through this workshop, the aim is to provide a real and healthy sex education, promoting a free, egalitarian sexuality free of violence. Hours and duration: 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
And on November 22, 2025, the XIII Lanzarote Race Against Gender Violence will be held, an event that raises awareness about gender violence, using sport as an engine for social change. The 2.8 km race will be held in Arrecife, along the Paseo de El Reducto, with the start and finish line in the Ramírez Cerdá Park. In addition to the race, awareness activities and exhibitions of educational campaigns will be carried out. Registration is free and technical shirts and gifts will be given to the participants.
