The Haría City Council approves the proposal for the support and defense of the silbo gomero, promoted by the Cabildo of La Gomera and the City Council of San Juan de la Rambla. The adhesion to the agreement was voted in favor, unanimously, during the last plenary session of the corporation.
In this way, Haría joins the petition to request the declaration of the silbo gomero as a Cultural Heritage, Intangible of Humanity and Asset of Cultural Interest of the Canary Islands in the Category of Tradition and Oral Expression.
The mayor of Haría, Alfredo Villalba, asserts that "the whistled language is a fundamental part of the history and heritage of La Gomera and, for this reason, we consider that it is crucial to promote measures that contribute to protecting it, as well as safeguarding its proper use."
For her part, the Councilor for Culture, Evelia García, affirms that "the silbo gomero is an essential legacy that must be protected and preserved, so we strongly support this initiative to ensure its recognition as a historical legacy."
The agreement will be sent to the Ministry of Culture to request that it declare its protection. The document states that it will also be delivered to the Government of the Canary Islands to urge the creation of an action protocol that "allows the control and prior authorization of any action related to the whistled language, initiated from any area (public or private) that is planned to be taught."
