The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, accompanied by the island councilor of Territorial Planning and Policy, Jesús Machín, and by part of the multidisciplinary team of the Department of Territorial Policy, have held a work meeting, on the island of Tenerife, with those responsible for Gesplan, the public company in charge of drafting the Island Planning Plan (PIO) for an amount of 1.3 million euros.

The objective of this coordination meeting, in which the CEO of Gesplan, Miguel Ángel Pérez, and the executive coordinator Arturo Cabrera were also present, as President Oswaldo Betancort advances, "is to closely monitor the deadlines to have, as soon as possible, this Island Plan, a document that has not been updated since 1991 and therefore does not respond to the current and future needs of our island."

Betancort affirms that, "it is an imperative necessity that Lanzarote has, once and for all, this instrument of planning and territorial organization to guarantee a sustainable development in our land, that respects our landscape and our natural resources and that has as its flag the values and the spirit of César Manrique."

In this way, the president underlines that "the fundamental objective of this Government group is to initially approve, in this same legislature, the future Island Plan of Lanzarote", and advances that "Gesplan has committed to deliver the draft of the plan and the special strategic document next September."

The Councilor for Territorial Planning and Policy, Jesús Machín, has been very satisfied after the coordination meeting with Gesplan where the different phases have been scheduled until the final approval of this Island Plan. Machín emphasizes that "this document, absolutely vital for our island, required to be reformulated and adapted to the new needs of Lanzarote and to the model of sustainable development and balanced growth for which we firmly bet."

It should be remembered that this process of updating the Island Plan of Lanzarote is presented as an opportunity to rationalize the management of resources, guaranteeing the protection of our natural and heritage spaces for future generations with the ultimate goal of achieving a sustainable and balanced development of the island.
