The pilot test carried out during the last two weeks of August on the access road to the Cueva de Los Verdes, leaving only one direction of traffic open, has been positively assessed by the administrations involved, who are now considering applying it during periods of high traffic, to avoid the queues that had been generated.
This was announced by the Cabildo, following the meeting held by the CEO of the Tourist Centers, Benjamín Perdomo, the mayoress of the Haría City Council, Evelia García, representatives of the General Directorate of Traffic and technicians from the Island Corporation, "with the aim of assessing the results of this pilot experience".
The Councilor for Public Works of the Cabildo, Alfredo Mendoza, describes this initiative as "a success". "We wanted to act on a problem that is only generated at certain times of the year, but that we cannot allow because it tarnishes the image of the island," says Mendoza, who assures that the Cabildo "will continue working to implement similar effective and efficient solutions in other strategic enclaves of the island."
After the meeting, the mayoress of the Haría City Council, Evelia García, pointed out that "once it has been verified that the temporary measure we adopted to solve the traffic collapse that occurred in the accesses to the Cueva de los Verdes has been viable, we believe that it can be applied at certain times with a greater influx of visitors."
In the same vein, the CEO of the Tourist Centers, Benjamín Perdomo, assured that "the initiative achieved the planned objectives, which were to improve road safety in the area and eliminate the queues to access the center, so we are already working with the DGT and the Haría City Council to implement this alternative at times of high traffic to the island, that is, mainly in the summer, Easter and Christmas seasons."
The CEO of the Tourist Centers is confident that this measure, "and the upcoming implementation of ticket sales by time slots through the platform, will help to decongest the Tourist Centers and, therefore, improve the quality of the experience."
As will be recalled, the Cabildo de Lanzarote's Roads Department closed one lane of the LZ-205 road (Jameos–Las Atalayas) to traffic in an experience endorsed by the DGT, in such a way that it was only allowed to circulate on that road in an upward direction, from the Jameos del Agua junction to the intersection with the LZ-201 that runs through the north of the island.
