The Deputy Minister of the Environment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Milagros Luis Brito, has signed the authorization that allows the entity Recuperadora Canaria de Metales y Chatarra to develop the activities of storage and valuation of vehicles from Lanzarote at the end of their useful life in the facilities of the Los Mármoles Industrial Estate.
This document allows the company to start in the aforementioned area the process of decontaminating the toxic elements of the vehicles and dismantling those special waste that can be subsequently recycled or reused.
The company, with the capacity to decontaminate a total of 20 vehicles per day, will be responsible for managing the entire process from the reception and storage of end-of-life vehicles to their decontamination and valuation.
This process will consist of the extraction and controlled removal of fuels, transmission fluids and other hydraulic oils, engine oils, differential and gearbox oils, cooling and antifreeze liquids, brake fluid, starter batteries, oil filters, brake shoes containing asbestos, components containing mercury, and air conditioning system fluids, liquefied gas tank and any other hazardous fluid.
It should be remembered that current legislation establishes that a vehicle cannot be permanently deregistered from the Directorate General of Traffic without having passed through an authorized treatment center. To this end, the managing entity will issue the so-called destruction certificate that will justify the definitive deregistration of the vehicle from the date of delivery thereof at the decontamination center.
Regarding this agreement, the Deputy Mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Luis Morales, said: "We are at an interesting moment for Arrecife, as various actions are being activated that make the efforts to minimize the waste generated on the Island a reality, also increasing the possibilities of recycling at the end of its useful life."
Luis Morales also recalled that a high number of vehicles circulate in Lanzarote, taking into account its surface area, so the number of deregistrations increases every year.
