2,215.3 kilograms of used batteries have been exactly the kilos collected from December to May by the fifty educational centers of infant, primary and secondary that have participated this year in the school contest 'Ponte las Pilas', organized by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, through Lanzarote Recicla of the Waste Area directed by Echedey Eugenio, and Ecopilas. Each kilogram contains an average of 40 batteries collected, according to Ecopilas, which means that thanks to this school contest about 89,000 disused batteries will be recycled.
The Councilor for Waste, Echedey Eugenio, the Councilor for Youth and Sports of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Patricia Pérez, and the Director of Communication of Ecopilas, Julio Lema, were in charge this morning of congratulating all the participating centers for the effort made and rewarding the two winning centers.
During the awards ceremony, they reported that "all these batteries will enter a recycling system coordinated by Ecopils, which allows us to conserve our natural environment and recycle more than 75% of the components of used batteries".

"During the development of the school year, Ecopilas has been responsible for removing the 'collectors' in each participating educational center, a cardboard box provided during the campaign that has allowed the educational community, students, parents, tutors and teaching staff, among others, to deposit used batteries, for their subsequent treatment and management of this waste highly harmful to the environment if not managed properly", explained the counselor and detailed that as a novelty this year, different didactic, informative and educational material and 17,000 minirecopiladores of Ecopilas have been delivered where the students of the 50 participating centers have been able to separate the used batteries in their homes to take them later to the educational centers.
This contest is framed as one more of the dynamization activities of the Recycling Project in Educational Centers 'Play Clean with your school', developed by the Waste Area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, through which more than 25,000 students daily separate the waste generated in the 70 schools on the island.
