The PSOE of Lanzarote has made a call to all citizens of the island to participate this Saturday, June 20, in the demonstration called by the Plataforma Marea Blanca in defense of the Insular Hospital. The mobilization will start at 11:00 AM from Parque Islas Canarias and will end in front of the hospital facilities.
The island secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and congresswoman, María Dolores Corujo, has encouraged families, professionals, social groups, associations, militants, sympathizers, and citizens in general to fill the streets of Arrecife to protect one of the most important health resources on the island.
“This Saturday, Lanzarote is playing for its geriatric and care model on the streets. We are playing for the way we want to care for our elders, accompany their families, and ensure that people receive public, close, specialized, and dignified care,” Corujo declared.
The socialist leader emphasized that the mobilization must become a great collective response from Lanzarote. “We have to take to the streets because the Insular Hospital needs the voice of the entire island. Every person who participates will be defending their history, their present, and their future. They will be defending our elders, their families, and the professionals who have been caring for us for decades,” she affirmed.
A hospital linked to the history of Lanzarote
Corujo recalled that the Insular Hospital opened its doors in 1950 and that during its 75 years of trajectory it has accompanied generations of Lanzarote residents. From its early stages to the consolidation of its geriatric specialization, the center has become a benchmark for its comprehensive and humanized care for the elderly.
“We all have a story related to the Insular Hospital. A mother, a father, a grandmother, a neighbor, or a loved one who received care and accompaniment there. When we talk about this hospital, we talk about memories, affections, and especially delicate moments in the lives of thousands of families,” she pointed out.
The socialist secretary also highlighted the role played by those who have sustained the center for decades. “We want to be alongside its professionals, who have built with their effort, their training, and their humanity a recognized care model inside and outside the Canary Islands. They have accompanied families in very difficult situations and deserve stability, resources, and guarantees to continue developing their work,” she stated.
The Insular Hospital has specialized units in geriatric care, medium stay, day hospital, and occupational therapy. Furthermore, it has played a fundamental role in the training of specialists in Geriatrics and Geriatric Nursing, making Lanzarote a benchmark in this field.
“Lanzarote has built its own specialized and profoundly humane geriatric model over decades. That health and social heritage belongs to all citizens, and we have the responsibility to protect it,” Corujo indicated.
Guarantees for its continuity
The PSOE of Lanzarote has once again called on the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Lanzarote for concrete commitments that ensure the continuity of the Insular Hospital as a public and specialized center, with a defined project, sufficient funding, and express guarantees to preserve its services and its care identity.
Corujo insisted that families and workers need certainty about the center's future. “We cannot accept vague announcements or promises that are not accompanied by a project, a budget, and a timeline. Lanzarote deserves to know what will happen with its hospital and needs the assurance that its geriatric model will continue to be fully operational.”
The socialist leader also rejected attempts to discredit citizen mobilization. “Defending a public hospital can never be considered a problem. Citizens have the right to express their concern and demand answers. Families and professionals have been demanding guarantees for months and deserve to be heard with respect.”
“The Insular Hospital has taken care of us”
Corujo thanked the work carried out by the Marea Blanca Platform, healthcare professionals, social organizations, and all the people who have kept the defense of the center active.
“Thanks to their commitment, Lanzarote has become aware of everything that is at stake. This mobilization is born out of affection for the Hospital Insular and the will to protect an essential service for our society,” he expressed.
Corujo concluded by inviting the entire population to participate in the march: “The Hospital Insular has taken care of us for 75 years. Now Lanzarote has to take to the streets to take care of it and defend it. This Saturday we must walk together for our elders, for their families, for their professionals, and for our island’s right to preserve a public model of care that we can be proud of. The Hospital Insular is not to be touched.”
