The spokesperson for the Canarian Coalition in the Tías City Council, Amado Vizcaíno, denounces the "absolute neglect of the municipal government group in the face of the very serious unsanitary situation in Playa Grande." "A week after the rains, the waste from fecal and rainwater continues to be scattered on the sand, without an effective cleaning or protection measures for citizens," they assure.
Vizcaíno has personally verified the "deplorable state" of the municipality's main beach. “We have found an area full of polluting remains: cigarette butts, plastics and, what is more alarming, a large number of hygienic wipes dragged by sewage water,” Vizcaíno points out.
The councilman emphasizes that "although the government group of the Tías City Council fills its mouth with speeches about the environment and sustainability, the reality is quite different." And it is that “not only have they not carried out a thorough cleaning, but they have not even taken basic security measures, such as delimiting the contaminated area to avoid risks to public health,” he points out.
“It is outrageous that in previous similar episodes the City Council has not acted diligently either. The same thing always happens: uncontrolled sewage spills and an administration that does not adopt the necessary measures to guarantee the cleaning and disinfection of the sand,” Vizcaíno denounces.
“From the Canarian Coalition we demand that the mayor and his government team abandon the routine of inaction and act immediately. An intensive cleaning of Playa Grande is urgent, as well as the implementation of protocols to prevent this situation from repeating itself in the future. It is unacceptable that in a tourist municipality like Tías such a level of unsanitary conditions and disinterest in the well-being of residents and visitors is tolerated,” the nationalist spokesperson asserts.
