The Secretary-General of the PSC-PSOE on the island of La Gomera and former senator, Casimiro Curbelo, announced this Wednesday that he is withdrawing from the electoral race to the Upper House "so that they stop talking" about him and his family by those who do not know him, and also to "make things easier" for the candidate for the Presidency of the Government, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba.
Curbelo stated in a press conference that he "wants to keep his word" when he left the Upper House and thus not have privileges after his arrest in Madrid. "Today I am going to make things easier for the party at the federal, regional, and island of La Gomera levels. To make things easier, I am withdrawing my candidacy for the Senate," he stated.
Similarly, Curbelo announced that "from today" he will try to work for a "profound" change in the project of the Canarian socialists so that they have the autonomy "they need to have." "It was attempted in the seventh congress. Something similar to what is being proposed in Catalonia," he said, adding that he seeks for the PSC-PSOE to have an adhesion protocol in such a way that it leads them to have the capacity to decide the candidacies in the elections or the pacts in the Autonomous Community or the island. The socialist has admitted that in recent days he has made a "detailed" assessment and that he has put on the scales "everything that needs to be put." "Knowing what is best for the PSOE, I leave the path clear for the PSOE leadership on the island of La Gomera," he recounted, recalling that now the formation on the Columbine island has two days to form a "winning and socialist" candidacy. "This proposal has all my consideration, all my decided support as a militant and as Secretary-General and President of the Cabildo," he stated, adding that it will be chosen by the grassroots.
"The PSOE at the federal level will have a candidacy for the Senate for La Gomera on the 8th, agreed upon by everyone and supported by everyone, and with the intention of being a winner, as always," summarized the socialist leader, who took the opportunity to thank the citizens and militants for their support. He recalled that since 1983 he has held public office representing the PSOE. He emphasized that in these days he has received "much loyalty," a fact that has filled him and moved him very much.

Today I am still a militant and a fortunate person. Curbelo also wanted to remember that he is still the president of the Cabildo of La Gomera and the only one of the seven local corporations who is so by obtaining an absolute majority at the polls.
