Ciudadanos (C´s) has registered a petition in the Parliament of the Canary Islands so that the Chamber urges the Government of the Canary Islands to demand from the Executive of Spain that "the Civil Guard be provided with the necessary bulletproof vests so that no member is left without one", and that "they be awarded according to the model and size appropriate to the gender and morphology of the agent".
In this regard, the regional coordinator of C´s in the Canary Islands, Mariano Cejas, recalled that, according to the Unified Association of Civil Guards, "the number of bulletproof vests available today is insufficient", and what is worse, "agents have to share them, without being sanitized between one shift or another, which poses a risk to their health".
In addition, "the vests are shared without taking into account the physiognomy of the agent wearing it", so "if it is small, it does not protect the agent, and if it is large, it makes it difficult to access the rest of the official material carried on the service belt".
Cejas also indicated that "the security of the corps cannot be subject to political decisions, especially now that we are at level 4 of terrorist alert". Therefore, he has stressed "the need for the Government of Spain to provide all agents with bulletproof vests", and that they "be granted taking into account the gender of the agent and their physiognomy".
"It is unacceptable that having vests adapted for women, their acquisition has not been contemplated", indicated the coordinator of C´s, who added that "with this decision, the fundamental requirement of providing adequate protection to the wearer is not being met.
