Despite the fact that there are only a few days left for Somos Lanzarote to culminate its primary process and that the party has chosen Lidia Pla as a candidate for Mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Borja Rubio, who was a candidate in the past elections to govern in the capital, has not revealed whether he will present his candidacy to try to lead the list to Parliament or some other institution on the island. "I am going to continue to be linked to Somos and lend a hand, whether on lists or outside of them" is the only thing he has limited himself to pointing out to La Voz after being asked about it.
According to Rubio himself, "the Somos primary process will end in mid-December." "But there are still several days left," said the Somos Lanzarote councilor in Arrecife, pointing out that there are still "possibilities to lead a list." "I have to talk to family members and also see how the Somos assembly breathes," added the party's Secretary of Organization, who said that he will make a decision "based on what they propose and the possibilities he sees of playing a successful role in the institutions."
"But what I can confirm and assure is that I am going to continue in Somos Lanzarote and that I will be supporting this project, whether leading a candidacy or from behind, because it is the project in which I believe. And I am going to continue contributing my grain of sand so that it grows, because I believe that Lanzarote needs an insular progressive force like Somos," Borja Rubio assured in any case, who has not ruled out being part of the body of some list if he does not lead any candidacy, although he has specified that the elaboration of the same will be carried out "next year."
"We will try to leave our skin in achieving the confluence"
In fact, although Somos Lanzarote has already chosen Lidia Pla as a candidate for the Arrecife City Council and Tomás López as a candidate for the Presidency of the Cabildo, it may be that none of them are heads of the list. And it is that, it must be remembered that the intention of the left-wing parties of the island is to go in confluence to the elections of 2019.
"And we will try to leave our skin in achieving this confluence, because we understand that it is something important, as long as the conditions are given so that there can really be a positive change in Lanzarote, which is what we are looking for," Borja Rubio specified in this regard, who although he is not part of the confluence table, participating for the party its political secretary, Paula Corujo, has said to have "constancy of the procedures" that are carried out in it.
"And I believe that there are wickers to achieve it and Somos Lanzarote has been from the beginning a party that has collaborated with allied political forces within the institutions", added the Secretary of Organization of Somos, who in this sense has highlighted the "good harmony" that has existed in this legislature "with IU in San Bartolomé and Teguise" and "in the case of Arrecife with Podemos.
"There cannot be a better candidate to be mayor of Arrecife"
However, for Rubio "there cannot be a better candidate for Somos Lanzarote and to be mayor of Arrecife" than his partner Lidia Pla, to whom he has given "all" his "support", also stating that he has been "one of the people who has promoted his candidacy", because he considers that she is "a very prepared person, who has also shown her worth within the institution itself."
"And it seems fundamental to me that Somos renews the heads of its candidacies, because that gives the feeling that it is a party with many people prepared to lead the first positions. In addition, I believe that it is important, and that is why I also encouraged her to do so, the fact that more women take the step to the front line of politics," said the Somos councilor in Arrecife, who believes that the party will come out "reinforced" with the candidacy of Lidia Pla. "And I believe that the project that we started in 2015 with me, with her and with Coralia within the municipal group will finally materialize through the Government in 2019, I am convinced of it," he added.
Incorporate people from civil society such as the president of Las Kellys
Borja Rubio also bets that, in confluence or not, "the largest number of people from civil society" will be incorporated into the political project of Somos and, in this sense, he has once again put on the table the desire to count on the president of Las Kellys, Myriam Barros, who already ran in 2015 on the Somos list to the Yaiza City Council. However, although Barros expressed the intention of going to the Cabildo for the 2019 elections, the Secretary of Organization of Somos has not confirmed whether she will finally be on the list to the first institution, after the party chose Tomás López to lead it.
"Myriam made it clear that her intention is to lend a hand to a common project and her gesture is appreciated, because it shows that her commitment is to the Somos project and not the ambition to participate in any position on any list as traditional parties do. And I believe that this is the line to follow and we will try to count on the maximum number of people from civil society who represent the desire for change that the island of Lanzarote has," he concluded.
