Arrecife has already exceeded 70,000 inhabitants of registered population. The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has reported that the Municipal Statistics Office registered, at the beginning of this month of July, a total of 70,973 registered people.
In January of last year, and according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the population residing in Arrecife was 64,826 people. In contrast, a decade ago it was 56,880 people.
The consistory has linked this population growth with "the job opportunities" that are being registered in Arrecife, "attracted by the opening of new companies, and the creation of employment", Yonathan de León detailed. The mayor added that "this important population growth" occurs "in a year where the Canarian economy is showing important signs of strength".
In detail, the Department of Statistics of the City of Arrecife, under the direction of Councilman Kevin Cortés, has specified that the highest percentages of new residents have been registered in the past months of March and June, which "coincide with tourist seasons and the establishment of new businesses" that are based in the capital of Lanzarote.
Councilman Kevin Cortés has detailed that last June, a total of 588 new registrations were made in the municipal register, and last March the figure was 64 people. The Statistics Office of the City Council confirms that "these new registrations of citizens who prefer Arrecife as a place of residence coincide with the drop in unemployment, and new registrations as contributors to Social Security, as well as the opening of new businesses".
Arrecife drives the economy in Lanzarote
The mayor of the city, Yonathan de León, has emphasized that this population growth, one of the largest in the province of Las Palmas, is linked to "the new job opportunities that families find to progress". Thus, and according to data from Social Security, 30,396 contributors are located in Arrecife, compared to 72,919 people at the island level. And in terms of employment, the decrease in the number of unemployed people has been confirmed for the first time, which in June was 3,884, one of the lowest levels recorded so far in the municipality, after the financial crisis of 2007.
Yonathan de León has highlighted the lack of housing for rent on the island. The City Council has ceded land to the Government of the Canary Islands for the construction of 400 public homes, of which the first 201 are already under construction. Arrecife is the only municipality in Lanzarote where public housing is currently being built, but construction is also planned in Yaiza.
For the mayor, "the increase in population - which has moved its new residence to Arrecife, may explain" that Arrecife is the Spanish municipality where more families compete for each rental home that comes on the market, according to data from a Spanish real estate portal.
"In Arrecife, employment and opportunities to progress are created, and more families come to our capital to reside", said the mayor.
