The Arrecife City Council has requested this Thursday afternoon to the population of the capital of Lanzarote to avoid parking, from now on, and until further notice, vehicles in the areas surrounding Portugal Street.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has deployed several agents of the Local Police to monitor these parking indications, from this noon in Portugal Street, and adjoining streets. The Department of Mobility and Transport, led by the councilor Mario González Altube, is installing fences on these roads with no parking signs.

Arrecife's preventive measure

The mayor informs that until this time of the afternoon no alerts have been activated from AEMET and the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands on the island of Lanzarote. It is known that the State Meteorological Agency has reported high probabilities of rain in the western islands of the Canary Islands. After the intense heat of last weekend in the Canary Islands, the Islands now expect showers. That is what the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) says, which has predicted for this Saturday, November 16, intense rainfall in the western islands of the Archipelago.

Meanwhile, and also as a forecast, the Department of Security and Emergencies of Arrecife, led by the councilor Kevin Cortés, has a retainer of Civil Protection personnel in preventive mode, in case their rapid intervention is necessary in some area of the city.

Arrecife, the 'mouth' of San Bartolomé and Teguise

As is known, the area of La Vega, in the center of the city of Arrecife, is in a risk zone in the event of heavy rains. The streets Dr. Juan Negrín, and Dr. Gómez Ulla, with higher elevations, channel the waters that enter Arrecide from neighboring municipalities of Teguise and San Bartolomé. The toponymy reflects that the name of La Vega was given to the neighborhood from the end of the 19th century as it was a fertile area by concentrating the rains towards this sector of the capital. The orography of Arrecife, a city born next to the tide, and with an elevation at the same level as the sea, makes it become a "natural mouth" of the waters that are recorded on San Bartolomé and Teguise.

It is notorious that the storm of 2023 over Arrecife, recorded at the end of November of last year, originated half an hour after the alerts were lifted by AEMET and the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands. Likewise, Lanzarote was on "alert" a few weeks ago, and there was no rain.

This Thursday, given this adverse weather situation over the western islands of the Canary Islands, Mayor Yonathan de León has activated preventive measures, even though there are no official alerts.
