The Mercedes Medina Díaz Association awards scholarships to 11 students

For this tenth edition, 10 scholarships had been announced, but finally one more has been awarded due to the "high number of applications". "Even so, we have not been able to cover all the real demands," the group points out.

The headquarters of the Sociedad Democracia de Arrecife has been the place chosen by the Mercedes Medina Díaz Association, for Covid reasons, as the stage for the delivery of the X edition of its scholarships to a total of 11 students. 

As explained by the association, initially 10 scholarships had been announced for students with a good academic record and who could prove that they did not have sufficient resources. However, "due to the consequences of the pandemic, a high number of applications have been submitted and, consequently, one more scholarship has been awarded". "Even so, we have not been able to cover all the real demands requested," he says in a statement. 

Specifically, in this tenth edition, beneficiaries have been Matteo Osaoome Osasere, who is studying 1st year of ADE in Extremadura; Maria Cathaisa Umpiérrez Bustos, who is studying 1st year of Medicine in La Laguna; Selena del Carmen Pérez Curbelo, a 3rd year student of Medicine in La Laguna; Joel Reyes Toledo, a 2nd year student of the Degree in Physics in La Laguna; Laura Daniela Guerrero Parrales, a 1st year student of the Degree in English Studies in La Laguna, and Natanael Martínez Morales, who is studying 4th year of Computer Engineering in Las Palmas.

Also, Salomé Quintero Morales, a 1st year student of Medicine in Salamanca, has been awarded a scholarship; Sofía Betancor Suárez, a 1st year student of Translation and Interpretation in La Laguna; Gabriela Benavidez Rojas, who is studying 3rd year of Medicine in Valladolid, Julia da Silva Marcos, who is studying 4th year of Criminology at the Complutense University of Madrid; and Yussef Martín Mohamed, a 2nd year student of the Degree in Social Work in La Laguna

 

Interventions and acknowledgements 

The Mercedes Medina Díaz Association has thanked the business groups CICAR, Bodegas Vega de Yuco, Taba-Control, Spar Lanzarote, Líneas Romero and other private donations for the help they have been providing so that these students can develop their careers.

The first scholarship recipient of the association, Antonio Maldonado García, and the last graduated scholarship recipient, Cristhian Caicedo Pedroza, who finished his architecture degree and is already incorporated into the labor market, were present at the award ceremony. Both spoke thanking "the support, backing and trust" throughout their studies, because "the association does not simply contribute an economic amount, but is in permanent contact and pending, accompanying the whole process". 

In addition, on behalf of the scholarship holders, Gabriela Benavidez Rojas, dedicated some emotional words of gratitude to the attendees.

On behalf of the businessmen, Ye Cabrera Morales took the floor to affirm "the important work that the Mercedes Medina Díaz Association carries out in the social life of Lanzarote, with almost half a hundred students who have been helped". In addition, he encouraged other companies and institutions "to join and support this interesting work, setting the goal of reaching 25 scholarships in the coming years".

According to reports, the Minister of Education excused her absence "for agenda reasons", although the Minister of Culture of the Cabildo, Alberto Aguiar Lasso, did speak, congratulating the work of the association, thanking the collaborating businessmen for their commitment and wishing the scholarship recipients good luck. 

The honorary president of the association, Mercedes Maura Palarea Medina, closed the event, thanking "all those who make this event possible", enthusiastically encouraging the lucky ones who are starting their studies and announcing the events related to the commemoration of the 10 years and, announced the events related to the commemoration of the 10 years of the Mercedes Medina Díaz Association itself, which will take place in the coming months.
