The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Department of the Máguez Nature Classroom of the Environment Service, has started in the current 2022-2023 school year the environmental education activities that are included within the "Educational Trails".
These activities, "highly demanded by educational centers in order to complement the didactic units that are taught in them", have pointed out from the Cabildo, benefited about 3,000 people during the past school year from both educational centers and social groups.
Included within the environmental education action plan developed by the Máguez Nature Classroom, "the purpose of these activities is to publicize the natural and historical cultural heritage of the island, also favoring awareness and the development of sustainable behavior models, among the younger generations, promoting interest and commitment towards the necessary and urgent ecological transition of the planet in which we live", explains the Councilor for the Environment of the Cabildo, Nicolás Saavedra.
The first trail with which these activities have begun has consisted of a walking tour of Arrecife, which has been carried out with the students of 1st year of ESO of the CEO Playa Blanca. Previously, the participating students received a talk by the environmental educators of the Department of the Máguez Nature Classroom about the main natural and historical-cultural values of the city, as well as the most important recommendations for the proper development of the trail.
This activity took place this past Tuesday, November 15 and took place along the coast of Arrecife (from La Puntilla to El Reducto Beach), allowing students to get to know the city through the different events and processes in its evolution and historical transformation that have left their mark on the character of Arrecife: from its origin as a primitive port or refuge for ships to becoming a city, capital and main population and administrative center of the island of Lanzarote.
"With this tour of the Arrecife coastline, students have also been able to discover the environmental value and its importance as a regenerator, refuge and food for the great marine fauna, especially due to the outstanding biodiversity of migratory birds," adds Councilor Nicolás Saavedra.
On the other hand, and within the strategic lines of the action plan of the Máguez Nature Classroom, different educational resources and materials have been made available to educational centers and interested people, which serve to complement and expand the contents linked to the offer of educational trails.
In addition, as a novelty in this 2022-2023 academic year, it should be remembered that an inclusive proposal for the activity "Educational Trails" was presented in October, aimed at students and people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which can be accessed through this link.
