The Government of the Canary Islands wanted to send a message to the population on the occasion of the celebration of Women's Day and has asked that no demonstrations be held on the islands on March 8.
This was stated by the spokesperson for the Canarian Executive, Julio Pérez, at the press conference after the Governing Council, in which an institutional declaration was approved on the occasion of 8M that will be read next Monday.
Julio Pérez indicated that the Public Health authorities consider that it is not convenient to have concentrations and crowds of people on the occasion of the celebration of Women's Day.
Pérez added that "it is possible that applications have been submitted to the offices of the Government Delegation and that no legal technical reasons have been found to prevent these demonstrations." That is the case of Lanzarote, where the Feminist Platform 8M has announced a "silent" concentration, while Mararía announced that it will not go out this year due to responsibility with the current health situation.
During his appearance before the media, Julio Pérez remarked that the Government of the Canary Islands is interested in expressing its "concern" about this type of concentration and believes that there are other ways to celebrate March 8.
In this sense, he advanced that that day there will be an act in Gran Canaria and another in Tenerife where the institutional declaration will be read, in an act that will be attended by the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the Minister of Social Rights, Noemí Santana.
