For the first time since its constitution 27 years ago, the social and cultural association for women Mararía will renounce taking to the streets on March 8 and will move its feminist demands to the virtual space of social networks and online communication. After being assessed by the Board of Directors, the unanimous decision has been not to call the annual demonstration, given the high-risk socio-health situation that Lanzarote is going through.
"In no way can we legitimize a demonstration that endangers those who support us in the fight for equality," said the entity's vice president, Carmen Delia Reyes.
From the group they emphasize that they "respect other options and arguments", but consider that the restrictions in Lanzarote "cannot be overlooked nor can the enormous effort made by its inhabitants to reduce the impact of the virus be minimized."
“With healthcare personnel, commerce, restaurants and tourism making an enormous sacrifice to redirect the epidemiological reality on the island, we must be empathetic and complicit in overcoming the crisis, which is especially hard on women. Electronic resources and new technologies offer us a non-optimal alternative, but at least acceptable in the present circumstances,” said Reyes.
The feminist association has announced that it will support and participate in the actions programmed by the municipalities of Tías and San Bartolomé, -with which it maintains agreements-, and will read its manifesto regarding feminist leadership, a demand to which the UN dedicates International Women's Day this year.
