From last October 15th to Sunday, October 18th, a great tribute to the Portuguese writer José Saramago is taking place in Penafiel, Porto, in which the César Manrique Foundation will participate with the intervention of its director of Foundational Activities, Fernando Gómez Aguilera. The tribute event will coincide with the world premiere of the author's latest work, "Cain".
Within the framework of "Writing in Penafiel 2009", dedicated to honoring the Portuguese Nobel Prize winner, various activities will take place culminating on the 17th and 18th with the organization of two days of analysis of Saramago's work, in which prominent specialists such as the Colombian novelist Laura Restrepo, the Brazilian film director Fernando Meirelles, Carlos Reis, rector of the Universidade Aberta de Lisboa, the Portuguese poet Nuno Júdice and the philosopher Eduardo Lourenço, Camões Prize, will participate.
His commitment and activism
The director of the César Manrique Foundation has been invited to analyze "Saramago's public intervention", in a conference in which he will address the political, social and literary commitment of the writer based in Lanzarote. He will propose a journey through the life and the most relevant public ideas of the author. From his well-known militancy in the Portuguese Communist Party, to his social activism committed to humanitarian, political and social causes, or his influence as a creator of world public opinion.
The César Manrique Foundation produced and organized the most exhaustive exhibition that has been made of the writer to date. The exhibition, inaugurated in Lanzarote by the Minister of Culture, has also been seen in Lisbon and São Paulo.
Three hours after the conference "Cain" will be launched, in which the author will be present together with his Portuguese editor, Zeferino Coelho.
