The Environment area of the Council has installed an artificial "pond" on the Islote de Alegranza to make water available to the avifauna of the area, "given the precarious situation caused by years of drought".
The councilor of Podemos Jorge Peñas, who has taken over the Environment area after the dismissal of his colleague Elena Solís, has been present at the installation, in which Environment workers of the Council have participated, supported by researchers who study the evolution of the fauna in Alegranza and by Gesplan personnel.
“It has been detected that birds have problems breeding given the aridity of the land, which causes many of them to have to travel to Lanzarote to drink, where they also encounter many difficulties. For this reason, this pond has been acquired and installed, which will allow the animals to suffer as little as possible from the high temperatures, as well as help mitigate the risk of the disappearance of birds due to the lack of rain,” Peñas explained.
The pond was installed this past Thursday, after reaching an agreement with the public company Gesplan and having the approval of the family that owns the Islote de Alegranza, and is especially designed for birds of prey such as falcons, Egyptian vultures and kestrels.
“We have the responsibility and the legal imperative to ensure the biodiversity of the islets,” adds the councilor, who details that “the pond is earth-colored to avoid environmental impact from land and air and that, in addition, birds approach more easily.”
The pond has been located next to the Alegranza lighthouse, from where some hoses were extended to proceed with its filling with the help of a motor pump. After that, the team of researchers who carry out their work on the islet will be responsible for ensuring that the water level of said pond is constant.
