The Arrecife City Council has given its approval this Thursday for the Arrecife Secondary Education Institute (IES) to be renamed Las Maretas, at the request of the center itself and according to an agreement of the School Council.

The Councilor for Education, Ascensión Toledo Hernández, explained the suitability of the new designation, stressing that "due to the place where the center is located - in the San Francisco Javier neighborhood next to the old Maretas del Estado or Maretas del Rey - it is culturally interesting to change its specific name".

However, she recalled, the Arrecife Institute received this name in January 1999 following the custom of using the name of the municipality or town where the educational center is located as a generic name. "18 years have passed and the School Council has rightly decided to change the name to recognize and pay tribute to the struggle of the women and men of Lanzarote to make the most of the resources of a territory that does not have natural tributaries, nor does it have a geography that favors the presence of water".

According to article 5 of decree 81/201, of July 8, which approves the Organic Regulations of non-university public centers in the Canary Islands relating to the "specific name of public educational centers", it is established that "public educational centers dependent on the Ministry of Education and Universities will have the specific name approved by said Ministry, at the proposal formulated by the School Council of the respective centers, after hearing the town councils of the municipalities where they are located".
