Four multi-sport courts, a cactus garden, picnic areas, playgrounds, a space for practicing calisthenics, a new skating rink, a stage and dance floors, among the proposals of the Arrecife City Council included in the Theme Park project, a space that, in part, has been "reclaimed from the sea".

The General Directorate of Coasts and Management of the Canarian maritime space, dependent on the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, has submitted for public information the concession to occupy the maritime-terrestrial public domain and reform this space in Arrecife, located next to El Reducto beach.

Said initiative has a base bidding budget of more than 8.3 million euros. The project, promoted by the Arrecife City Council, will be available to any interested person through the website during 20 working days from its publication in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands this Monday.

During this period, the appropriate allegations may be submitted through the Eastern Coastline Management Service of the Directorate of Coasts.

A space affected by the strong swell and the rise in sea level

The stage, the dance floor and the viewpoint projected in the area of Punta del Camello are within the artificial coastline, which took land from the sea in the mid-fifties of the last century. Currently, the project states that this enclave is built on a landfill that modified the original coastline to place a platform that would protect El Reducto beach. With the latest wave alert, part of the walls and the cobblestones of this space were destroyed, although it is not the first time something like this has happened.

With climate forecasts due to sea level rise, the project states that the coastline between La Bufona and Punta del Camello, "will not undergo major changes or will be of low influence." Meanwhile, they do add that from now to within less than 25 years, El Reducto beach will lose part of its space due to sea level rise and in these forecasts, a part of the project is affected, the avenue that is between the current skate park and El Reducto beach. The difference between both assumptions lies in the slope, which is very slight on the beach of Lanzarote's capital and therefore more vulnerable to climate risks.

Based on the results of PIMA Adapta Costas, the project also contemplates that in the worst of climate scenarios, if the burning of fossil fuels continues as it has until now until the end of the century, there could be coastal floods in the area of El Reducto beach closest to the Theme Park, as well as in the space of this park closest to the Cabildo roundabout, as well as above the coastline.
