The Association of Mothers and Fathers of Students of CEIP Nieves Toledo has requested the Ministry of Education to take into account "the criterion of proximity to the home" for the sixth grade students of the center, who must now enroll in IES Arrecife. Thus, the AMPA of this school opposes the change for these students, who until now had IES Zonzamas as their reference institute, and has asked Education to consider this criterion "exceptionally", so that "those students who wish can enroll in other secondary schools".

The parents explain that, with the "reorganization of the educational map" of the capital, the students of Nieves Toledo, whose reference institute was IES Zonzamas, now have a place in IES Arrecife. "However, this center is, of all those in the city, the furthest from the school," they point out. For this reason, they request that the Ministry "urge the school boards of the other secondary schools to take this criterion into account".

This Monday there was an informative meeting at CEIP Nieves Toledo between the parents of the students, the management of the IES Arrecife center, a representative of the Educational Inspection and the island director of Education, Mario Pérez, to inform about this change. During the meeting, the AMPA expressed its "opposition" to this measure, "because the center is more than 2.2 kilometers away." "In the meeting, Mario Pérez explained that the arbitrary criterion that has been followed is that IES Arrecife is close to IES Zonzamas," points out the AMPA, which understands, however, that it is not close to C.E.I.P Nieves Toledo. Thus, they emphasize that the center houses "mostly" students belonging to the Valterra neighborhood.

The parents also explained that it is "the second time in five years that the reference institute has been changed", since before it was the School of Fisheries. According to them, the island director "promised to consult if the criterion requested by the families can be applied".

The AMPA also points out that Pérez admitted that the decision "has been taken a little late", since the pre-registration for enrollments for the next course opens this Wednesday. They regret that "the opinion of neither the educational community nor the parents of the students has been taken into account." In this sense, the president of the AMPA of Nieves Toledo, Iván Martin, has conveyed the "discomfort caused by not having counted on the families to agree on other alternatives, on the part of the Ministry of Education".
