On Friday night, the 22nd Guanapay Festival and the jury's decision in the Coplas Contest were held at the Santo Domingo Convent in Teguise. The prize for the best verse went to "Punto de sal", by Juan Carlos Monteverde from Tenerife, and the prize for the best set of verses went to "Malagueña a la madre", by Emilio Fernández Batista from Tías.
The event began with the staging of the folklore group "Buchito de Café". Arriving from the Marian Villa de Teror in Gran Canaria, its foundation dates back to 2008 and it has a total of 42 members, and they also have a recorded album whose title is "Un buchito por Canarias". Their performance was based on songs and dances from Gran Canaria such as Pericon, Malagueña, Isa Parrandera or the famous song by Nestor Álamo, Noche en Arguineguín. They stood out especially for their staging, with very well-cared choreographies, where their varied and colorful clothing kept the public expectant throughout their intervention.
Immediately afterwards, the jury's decision for the coplas festival was announced and, as has been customary every year, the Guanapay family dedicates the festival to one of the Canarian traditions, this year corresponding to the "Hand Ball Game". Especially rooted in the towns of Soo, Tiagua and La Villa de Teguise. For this reason, José Manuel Auta took to the stage to give a historical overview of this game. Guanapay wanted to recognize the perseverance of some of the most veteran players who still practice from time to time.
For this edition, Guanapay chose the most representative of Lanzarote folklore, with folías, malagueñas, seguidillas, as well as one of the oldest dances, rescued by the group. This dance is known as the ribbon or pique dance. Guanapay has a very loyal audience that always responds to each of the calls to continue showing their support and thus keep that precious legacy alive. The event ended with an isa parrandera entitled, Isa del vino para invitar.
