Spain imposes a 14-day quarantine on travelers coming from abroad

Travelers coming to Spain from abroad must quarantine for 14 days after their arrival, according to an Order from the Ministry of Health published this Tuesday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), which will be effective from next Friday, May 15 and will be in force during the state of alarm and its possible extensions.

Spain thus follows in the wake of a large part of its European neighbors, who have been establishing quarantine periods of 14 days for travelers entering their territories. In Spain, this measure has been applied to the exceptional authorizations granted for the repatriation of Spaniards and residents in Spain from Italy. Now it will be done with every international traveler, although there will be exceptions.

As the Government argues in this Order, the favorable evolution of the epidemiological situation" in Spain and the beginning of the de-escalation "make it necessary to reinforce control measures, in such a way that, bearing in mind the global distribution of the virus and based on the principle of precaution, it is considered necessary to apply to people coming from abroad the need to carry out a quarantine for 14 days".

They must limit their travel to essential activities

During this quarantine period, travelers coming to Spain must remain in their home or accommodation, limiting their travel to the acquisition of food, pharmaceutical products and basic necessities; attendance to centers, services and health establishments, and other travel for reasons of force majeure or situation of need. In all of them the use of a mask will be mandatory.

Similarly, the Order establishes that all hygiene and/or prevention measures for the transmission of the disease caused by the coronavirus must be observed, especially with regard to contact with cohabitants.

Health authorities may contact people in quarantine to monitor them. In any case, in the event of symptoms such as fever, cough, difficulty breathing, general malaise or other symptoms of a suspected case of Covid-19, people in quarantine "should contact the health services by telephone using the numbers provided by the autonomous communities, indicating that they are in quarantine because they come from abroad", the Order states.

All these measures do not apply to cross-border workers, transporters and crews, as well as health professionals who are going to carry out their work, provided they have not been in contact with people diagnosed with Covid-19.
