The Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Poli Suárez, attended this Wednesday, together with the rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lluís Serra, to the start of the University Access Test (PAU) at the School of Architecture of the ULPGC, one of the venues that, until this Saturday, hosts the ordinary call for exams.

With his visit, Suárez wanted to show his support to the students, and thank the previous work of all the staff involved in the preparation of the test.

A total of 11,028 students from all over the Canary Islands are facing their exams this week in twenty locations spread across the campuses of the universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna (ULL), different schools and other spaces on the islands.

Regarding the islands, 4,806 are examined in Tenerife, 4,490 in Gran Canaria, 676 in Lanzarote, 546 in Fuerteventura, 412 in La Palma, 68 in La Gomera and 30 in El Hierro.

Most of these students attend the exams after having completed the Baccalaureate, as well as the Higher Grade Training Cycles of Vocational Training, Professional Education of Plastic Arts and Design and Sports Education, this year or previous ones.

Added to these are also applicants over 25 years, over 45 years and over 40 years with work experience.

A total of 5,316 of them are taking the tests in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, of which 4,606 have registered in the general phase of the University of La Laguna (ULL) and 710 in the specific phase, reserved for those who come from training cycles or want to raise the qualification obtained in previous calls.

In the case of the province of Las Palmas, 5,712 students have enrolled in the ULPGC, with 4,956 applicants in the general phase and 756 in the specific one.

By branches, 5,170 students are examined in Science and Technology, 3,737 in Humanities and Social Sciences and 589 in Arts, to which are added 776 from the new General Baccalaureate modality and 756 from FP.

Start of the tests

On this first day, students face the core subjects in the modality of Humanities and Social Sciences, Arts and General; on Thursday, those of Science and Technology, while on Friday it will be the turn of the compulsory subject of the branch taken by each student, and, on Saturday, the optional ones. The same Saturday will be the day reserved to resolve the cases in which the applicants have not been able to attend any exam due to time coincidence, up to a maximum of two subjects.

Regarding the schedules, the exams will be held in four sessions: the first, from 09.30 to 11.00 hours; from 12.00 to 13.30, the second; the third, from 16.00 to 17.30, and the fourth and last, from 18.30 to 20.00 hours.

Students who fail the ordinary call, want to improve their grade, or who, due to exceptional circumstances, could not register on time, may avail themselves of the extraordinary call, scheduled for the 3rd, 4th and 5th of July.

The grades can be known on June 14 from 13:00 hours and the revision period will be until June 18. The final grades will be published on June 21.

Adaptations to the LOMLOE

In general terms, and on a transitional basis, the previous model of the test is maintained, with minimal adaptations to the new Education Law agreed between the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports and the Canarian public universities, through the Organizing Committee of the Test for Access to the University (COPAU).

Thus, each student may choose in the compulsory phase between History of Spain or History of Philosophy, subjects that this year have become core subjects.

In addition, this course continues the single exam model with several questions to choose from. Each exercise lasts 90 minutes (except for those students with exam adaptations) with 30 minutes of rest between consecutive tests.

Another of the modifications incorporated this year, pending the definitive implementation of the new PAU adapted to the LOMLOE, is that the list of subjects of the modality from which students can be examined has been expanded. This list of subjects includes Mathematics II (in Science and Technology), Applied Mathematics to Social Sciences (in Science and Technology and in Humanities and Social Sciences) and Latin II (in Humanities and Social Sciences). Also added are Musical Analysis II, Performing Arts II (in Music and Performing Arts), General Sciences (in General) and Artistic Drawing II (in Plastic Arts, Image and Design).
