In the Canary Islands, so far in 2024, a total of 224 applications for aid for victims of sexist violence have been submitted, of which 96 have been definitively resolved and 104 have already been reviewed, and of these, 89 are in the processing phase due to requirement.
The Minister of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families, Candelaria Delgado, reported this Friday in a parliamentary commission that they estimate that before the end of the year the Canary Islands Institute of Equality will resolve almost 600 applications for these aids since the legislature began.
1.3 million euros have been invested in these subsidies by the Government of the Canary Islands, which has requested a budget modification of 100,000 euros more this year to be able to meet the applications submitted and those that were unresolved from previous years.
As she detailed when asked by the mixed group, when she arrived at the Government she found 254 applications for aid to women victims of gender violence unresolved by the previous executive that corresponded to the years 2022 and 2023.
During the year 2022, 222 applications were received, of which 97 have been resolved in the current legislature, between July and December 2023.
In 2023, the applications received from January to June were 157, which were also resolved in the committed period between July and December 2023, with 117 more applications entering in this last period.
In total, 274 aid files were received in 2023. Of these 274 files, as of today 271 have been resolved, with three pending because they are in the processing phase because a requirement has been made to the applicant.
The Minister recalled that women victims of gender violence can also access the granting of contributions charged to the Canary Islands Social Emergency Fund to address situations that require immediate assistance and that are regulated and attended to by the councils.
These aids are intended to immediately address social emergency situations in which women victims of gender violence and their children find themselves, Delgado said, who added that they are final in nature and are configured as a temporary coverage instrument against these needs.
In addition, she has confirmed that the councils already have 8.1 million for the consolidation and maintenance of the Canary Islands system of prevention and comprehensive intervention against gender violence and thus finance the various resources of the gender violence network, such as shelters, emergency devices for assaulted women, services and specialized intervention centers.
