Students from the Lanzarote institute Las Maretas have participated in the project 'Support in the Classroom of Science and Technology Baccalaureate' organized by the ULPGC.
This is an educational innovation program that promotes the Government of the Canary Islands to promote scientific vocations in the STEM areas, especially among young people. In total, 450 first-year high school students, from 15 institutes throughout the Canary Islands, participated last week in a dozen construction materials tests in the laboratories of the School of Industrial and Civil Engineering.
The project proposes different challenges to the students (spaghetti bridge contest, gymkhanas) and provides the opportunity to carry out training activities related to engineering, which are adapted to the Baccalaureate curriculum and distributed throughout the academic year (site visits, laboratory practices, computer simulation practices).
The practices, led by the Civil Engineering faculty, took place over several days. The agenda included the main tests for the characterization of materials such as steel or concrete. In addition, they included a section dedicated to hydraulics, a matter of great interest, given the importance of the hydroelectric works that are being carried out in the archipelago.
"This year, two institutes located on non-capital islands have stood out: Las Maretas, in Lanzarote, and Vigán, in Fuerteventura. Both centers, in a marathon day, with an early start included and after crossing the skies at dawn, have brilliantly overcome the challenges posed in the laboratory and have shown that progress in knowledge is only exclusive to the student who takes advantage, with commitment, of the opportunities offered by the family and society", conclude from the organization of the project.
