The arrival of the rains that the tropical storm Hermine will bring puts the focus of attention on those places subjected to a greater risk of flooding on the island.

The Flood Risk Management Plan of the Hydrographic Demarcation of Lanzarote identifies the areas of greatest flood risk on the island of Lanzarote. The areas that this plan identifies as having the greatest risk of river flooding are:

  • Argana Alta Ravine (Arrecife)
  • Hurón Ravine (Costa Teguise)
  • La Elvira Ravine (Haría)
  • Tenegüime Ravine (Teguise/Haría)
  • Los Pocillos Ravine (Tías)
  • La Fuente Ravine (Tías)

Along with these areas, which are the ones that may accumulate the largest amount of water, historically the urban areas are the ones that, due to the lack of infrastructure, usually suffer the most from the effects of heavy rains, as is the case in some areas of Arrecife, Costa Teguise and Playa Honda.

In the case of the capital, flooding problems are frequent in areas such as the Four Corners and La Vega. In Costa Teguise, the main impact usually occurs on the roads leading out of the town towards Arrecife, such as Avenida de las Palmeras or Calle Piteras.

The Government of the Canary Islands has offered a series of public recommendations in case of flooding. The Emergency Consortium has been working since last Friday on the preparation of the most sensitive areas, as well as on the relocation of people living on the street. Some city councils have intensified the cleaning of drains in recent days as a preventive measure against the rains.
