The families of the students of the first two grades of Primary school of CEIP Guenia, in Guatiza, convey to the Department of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands their "concern and disagreement" with the decision to join both courses into one.
Specifically, and through a General Instance, they have addressed the General Directorate of Educational Planning, Inclusion and Innovation. In their writing, the families remind the General Directorate that "the educational regulations establish a maximum of 20 girls and boys in classes that accumulate more than one course for centers such as CEIP Guenia and that this expected maximum can reach 22 on an exceptional basis".
In a statement, the families assure that "the same regulations impose on the administration the obligation to guarantee the reduction of these ratios to allow adequate attention to diversity, an obligation that the General Directorate has not taken into account".
As the families point out, the case of CEIP Guenia has "unique characteristics, since in that total of 22 students, several with specific educational support needs are included".
"This is a group that has several students with specific educational support needs (NEAE), including two students with special educational needs (NEE) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who have a psycho-pedagogical report and others who are being assessed by the center and mental health," the families said in the letter addressed to the General Directorate.
"It is very unlikely that this reality occurs in other centers, so we understand that there is no clear answer for these cases in the current regulations. That is why we believe that for the same teacher, giving an answer to all the students is going to be a clearly complicated task, assuming this the delay of all the students, even more so taking into account that the first courses are of vital importance to acquire the basic learning," they explained.
In this line, in the letter presented to the Ministry, the families request that "they separate said course, for which an additional educational unit and educational support will have to be provided".
