The Colegio Europeo Daos has stopped offering all levels of primary and secondary education and will only maintain the first and second cycle of early childhood education, between 0 and six years old, for the next school year. This has been confirmed to La Voz by the director of this private center, Elvira Ramos Ferré, and this newspaper has been able to verify it through the website of the Ministry of Education.through the website of the Ministry of Education.
Elvira Ramos Ferré has assured that, for the school year that begins in September, the center will remain only "as a nursery and early childhood space".
Closure announcement through an app
Furthermore, the director Elvira Ramos has added that this closure was communicated "to both parents and the Ministry of Education a year ago." However, a group of mothers and fathers of secondary school students has revealed that it was not until April 12 of this year that they were notified through an educational application. "No meeting, nothing, she didn't even face us," one of the mothers reproached.
In the statement that the center issued to parents through the application, it can be read that "due to low profitability, we are forced to cease our work in this Educational Cycle, as we do not cover costs." The text also points to "the extraordinary circumstances that we have gone through since COVID-19."
Before being informed of the closure, the parents of the center who wanted to keep their children in the center had already paid the tuition for the next school year. Although the money was returned to them once it was announced that the service would not continue, the parents suffered an odyssey to relocate the students in other centers on the island.
This same Wednesday, the director added that the students of compulsory education, from first grade of primary school to fourth grade of secondary school, are already relocated in other schools and institutes, both public and private. Last year, 2022/2023, the Colegio Europeo Daos offered care to minors from two years old to fourth grade of secondary school. In addition, this school, located in Puerto del Carmen, gave classes in up to four languages.
Furthermore, regarding the closure of Primary in Daos, this group of mothers has revealed that the center tried to unite different classes, without success, so they communicated the closure already in June. "The sixth-grade students were not informed that they would not be able to continue next year," they pointed out.
