The Arrecife City Council held a minute of silence this Monday morning, January 4, 2021, in memory of Mariam Ibarlucea, a 65-year-old resident of Gáldar who was murdered by her partner during Christmas week in the north of the island of Gran Canaria.

The mayoress of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, has expressed her dismay at this "brutal murder" of a woman victim of gender violence. The minute of silence took place at 12:00 noon at the doors of the Arrecife City Council, where, in addition to Pérez, the councilor for Social Services, Immigration and Equality, and spokesperson for the PP, María Jesús Tovar, and other representatives of the Corporation were present.

According to reports, Manuel, from Andalusia and who confessed to her death, arrived at Mariam's shack looking for a place to sleep and began a romantic relationship with her that ended on December 26, the day of the murder. Her partner deliberately burned the corpse of Mariam Ibarlucea to leave no trace, and surrendered to the police in Lanzarote, the island to which he traveled after the crime.
