The trade union Unión Sindical Obrera (USO) of the Canary Islands has denounced the lack of response from the Ministry of Health to "the serious" situation faced by health transport professionals in the archipelago. According to a press release, transport employees suffer "precarious working conditions, extreme stress and breaches in the regulation of the concessionary companies are deteriorating both the quality of the service and the safety of workers and users".

The companies in charge of health transport, both urgent and non-urgent, "operate without adequate supervision, violating labor and technical regulations, which directly affects patient care". Thus, it has indicated that "despite the continuous attempts at dialogue by USO requesting the Canary Islands Health Management and the Ministry of Health itself, requests for meetings have been ignored, or the scheduled dates have been canceled, without any justification, demonstrating the lack of interest in resolving the crisis in the sector".

This union has added that "the patience of the professionals has reached its limit" and, given "the inaction" of the Government of the Canary Islands and "the negligence" of the Ministry, the USO union "is currently studying measures to take to demand immediate solutions".

From USO they have demanded that the Ministry of Health "fulfill its responsibility to supervise health transport and guarantee decent working conditions, as well as a quality service for citizens".

The provincial head of USO-Canarias for Health Transport and member of the TASISA company committee, Jonathan González, has also pointed out that, “with these facts, the little interest that the administration has in solving the problems that this sector has been dragging for a long time is understood. What's more, it makes us think that the cancellation of all meetings with this union is a clear example of not wanting to recognize -and in turn hide the mismanagement and the free hand that is being granted to the awarded companies after the repeated breaches of the tender specifications”.

In view of what has happened, USO "considers the path of dialogue -which has not existed- with the administration and GSC to be over, so it will soon announce pressure measures to solve this very serious situation that affects workers and users".
