The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Department of Education, coordinated by Myriam Barros, presented this Wednesday at a press conference the report of the project "Bullying 1,2,3...Action". This study reveals worrying data regarding school bullying, one of them being that 8.5% of those surveyed have suffered bullying "in recent times".
This program has the collaboration of the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation, through CaixaBank, and has been developed in 19 schools on the Island, involving 942 children in face-to-face and online formats.
According to the analyzed data from the 623 samples belonging to the face-to-face format, 2.8% indicate having suffered aggressions in their previous school, while 2.2% indicate suffering aggressions since always and 1% indicate suffering aggressions since always and in their previous school. In addition, 3.5% indicate having suffered aggressions in the Infant stage, as well as the fact that 8.5% indicate having suffered them in recent times.
The study in the students also reflects that 6.3% indicate suffering aggressions in the past year, that 17% indicate having suffered aggressions in previous years and that 2.6% feel fear very often when going to the center. On the other hand, more than 6% indicate feeling fear towards one or several classmates, and 24% feel fear towards class tasks, and, regarding friendships, 5.5% indicate not having any, 9.2% indicate having only one and almost 1% do not know if they have any.
From the Cabildo they also point out that after the sessions carried out, 88% recognize the importance of group support and self-esteem, 73% show interest in the continuity of activities of this type, more than 86% have experienced empathy, more than 75% have been very satisfied with the project and group work and passive or indifferent options in the face of aggressions have decreased significantly.
Regarding the teaching staff, 39% indicate having known cases of school bullying, while 56% consider that they have the necessary tools in case of school bullying and 5% do not consider the action protocol adequate in case of bullying. In addition, more than 54% consider the involvement of families vital to act jointly in conflict resolution; 54% of the teaching staff have carried out actions, and 92% indicate adding proposals to the project.
To conclude, from the Corporation they point out that this year it has been observed that the number of minors who do not have friendships "has doubled", which may be a consequence of the previous health situation. Also, it has been recorded that girls suffer "5% more aggressions than boys", the opposite case to last year. On the other hand, the place where the greatest number of aggressions are witnessed continues to be the playground and the classroom. Regarding the type of aggressions, aggressions through technology have decreased slightly in favor of physical or indirect aggressions such as social rejection.
The event was presided over by the Councilor for Education, Youth and Equality, Myriam Barros, and the pedagogue of the program, Cel Martín. The councilor highlighted "the great functioning and reception of this new edition of a project so important for the eradication of a scourge such as school bullying".
“Through pedagogical methods and the combination of performing arts and school debates, we have been able to detect and prevent possible cases of bullying in the participating centers”, she detailed.
The pedagogue of the program, Cel Martín, for her part, explained that initial and final questionnaires, pretest and posttest, were carried out, where the cases of each classroom were studied and detailed the methods used to reach the final results.
