The case of the Lanzarote resident joins three others that occurred on other islands. On the same day that the elderly man was admitted to the General Hospital of Lanzarote, a woman died in the Insular Hospital of Gran Canaria and a day before two other people, a 48-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman, were admitted to the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital in Tenerife, also affected by heatstroke and breathing problems. Both remain stable and are recovering favorably.
On the website of the Ministry of Health you can find a section at the address [www.gobiernodecanarias.org/sanidad/calor/->http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/sanidad/calor/], which includes all the recommendations that the General Directorate of Public Health reminds citizens to take extreme precautions to prevent heat from causing damage to their health, with special care for children, the elderly and the sick.
Among the main recommendations is to drink more water regardless of the type of activity being carried out, to stay well hydrated, avoid heavy meals and the consumption of alcoholic, caffeinated and very sugary drinks and also, do not expose ourselves to the sun for too long or at times when the sun's rays reach more vertically (from 12 to 4 p.m.).
If, despite these preventive measures, symptoms of heat disorder occur, it is recommended to cool off with a sponge or damp towels, take a bath if you do not have dizziness, drink cool non-alcoholic liquids and, if the symptoms do not subside, seek medical help as soon as possible.
To avoid situations that endanger the health of the people of the Canary Islands, the Ministry of Health activated on June 1 the control operation of the III Canary Plan for the Prevention of the Effects of High Temperatures with which all hospitals of the Canary Health Service (SCS) have personnel designated and specially trained to effectively deal with and coordinate the services of care to the population in the event of a heat wave. The device will be in effect until September 30.
