Lanzarote has more vehicles per inhabitant than cities like Madrid or Barcelona

In 2023, the Canary Islands had an average of 831 vehicles per thousand residents, according to figures from the Vehicle Fleet published by the Canary Islands Government.

The sector's dependence also generates "vulnerability" in the islands' air and sea connections, mainly due to "economic fluctuations and changes in tourist demand." In this sense, it warns of the carbon footprint produced by air traffic as "one of the main problems." 

Meanwhile, this report points out the "dependence on private cars" in Lanzarote. "During the high season, traffic congestion and internal mobility problems are being suffered." At the same time, it highlights that the lack of an "efficient" public transport infrastructure means "depending on private cars" and "increasing the environmental footprint and mobility costs." 

The island of volcanoes is the second of those analyzed with the most registered vehicles, up to 6,324 in 2024. These data, both in Lanzarote and Ibiza, show "a high dependence on tourism and the need for mobility."
