Leñazo, alongarse, bucio, folía, fonil, canchanchán, chafalmeja, fajarse, fotingo, guanijey and zumbadera. These are the eleven words of the Canarian lexicon that served as inspiration for the works presented by the six educational centers of the Canary Islands that have been proclaimed winners of the Mi Canarismo Favorito contest, convened by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands and in which 52 Canarian centers have participated this year.
The Early Childhood and Primary Education Centers (CEIP) María Suárez Fiol, in Gran Canaria, and Juan Cruz Ruiz, in Tenerife, together with the Secondary Education Institutes (IES) Arguineguín-Lidia Pulido (Gran Canaria), Granadilla de Abona (Tenerife) and San Bartolomé (Lanzarote), were the winners in the different modalities of the educational contest Mi Canarismo Favorito. In addition, IES La Oliva, in Fuerteventura, received a special mention for its outstanding participation.
This initiative, promoted by the General Directorate of Planning of Education, Inclusion and Innovation —coordinated by David Pablos—, has the collaboration of the Canarian Academy of Language. Now in its fourth edition, Mi Canarismo Favorito pursues the development and strengthening of communicative competence based on the use of Spanish from the Canary Islands, while encouraging teachers to develop projects that integrate the cultural heritage of the archipelago, with special attention to the use and knowledge of Canarianisms. In the words of Pablos, the Mi Canarismo Favorito contest is "a clear commitment to nourish our classrooms with content and learning linked to our heritage."
