The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esther Monzón, reviewed this Thursday morning in the Health Commission of the Regional Parliament the measures implemented by the Management of the Health Services of the Health Area of Lanzarote to reduce the healthcare pressure at the Valterra Health Center in Arrecife.

Thus, a new Family Care Unit has been created, a new model of medical agenda has been launched in said health center, and the staff of the Normal Emergency Service has been reinforced. "These actions are aimed at reducing waiting times and improving the efficiency of the service," Monzón noted.

In this sense, the Minister detailed that, given the increase in healthcare demand in the Arrecife II Basic Health Zone, the Management has adopted these measures, which include a new Family Care Unit, whose purpose is to reduce the quotas of Family Medicine and ensure faster healthcare to the population assigned to this basic zone.

With the new consultation, the Valterra Health Center now has a total of 18 Family Medicine units, composed of a total of 36 health professionals: 18 in Medicine and 18 in Nursing. "Since the launch of the new team, a significant improvement in care quotas has been observed.

In February, each primary care health professional at this center attended to an average of 1,508 health cards, while in May this figure decreased to an average of 1,438. This is an important health center that covers almost 26,000 adult health cards, and in 2023 it carried out about 132,600 consultations, and between January and May of this year, around 62,000 had already been registered," added Esther Monzón.

New agenda model

The objective of the Management is to continue incorporating the measures and reinforcements that are necessary to expedite the scheduled Primary Care in this center. Therefore, a new medical agenda model has been launched to minimize the waiting times of users in consultations and thus prevent them from going to the Emergency service.

According to Monzón, "thanks to this model, the waiting time has been reduced to two days, compared to the five that were previously recorded, which has had a positive impact."

Reinforcement of the Emergency service

The third measure implemented is the incorporation of a new Nursing professional in the Emergency service of the Valterra Health Center, an action that responds to the need to improve coverage in the time slot with the highest influx of patients to this device.

Currently, the staff of professionals in this service is made up of 15 doctors, 14 nurses, and three auxiliary nursing care technicians.
