The FeSP-UGT union section of the Tahíche prison has denounced "the passivity on the part of the management team" of the prison regarding the behavior observed in recent weeks of the "very violent and dangerous" inmate who attacked nine public prison employees last Thursday, as published by La Voz. The union believes that this behavior "foreshadowed the outcome that occurred when he attacked and seriously injured several service officials."

In the union's opinion, "the permissiveness on the part of the Deputy Security Directorate, allowing the inmate to have freedom of movement throughout the center, agreeing to all types of demands from him, and avoiding using the tools that the Prison Regulations allow in terms of limitations on conflictive and dangerous inmates, have caused the inmate to believe he was immune to all regulations, leading to events that have seriously endangered the integrity of prison workers."

The union has pointed out that on several occasions they have already denounced to the Directorate "that transfers of highly conflictive and violent inmates were arriving from other maximum security prisons to this center, whose architectural characteristics are not designed for the treatment of this type of inmates."

"Conflictive and violent inmates continue to be assigned"

According to FeSP-UGT, the security deficiencies of the center have been brought to the attention of the director, the management center, and the Labor Inspectorate by the union, "but far from solving them, conflictive and violent inmates continue to be assigned, without any type of connection to the island, and with the acquiescence of the Classification and Treatment Services of the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions."

For these reasons, the union demands the immediate cessation of transfers of inmates with violent and conflictive backgrounds to the Tahiche prison. They also request the "immediate development of specific protocols adapted to the deficient security conditions of the center, for the treatment of inmates with violent and conflictive profiles, until their transfer to other more suitable centers."

They also request the "immediate development of an adequate training plan to deal with situations of inmate violence for prison workers" and that "prison workers be considered agents of authority in the exercise of their duties by the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions."

On the other hand, the FeSP-UGT union section of the prison has expressed its solidarity with the attacked officials and "its strong protest against the attack on said officials."
