The Cabildo of Lanzarote has confirmed that the accident that occurred this Friday in the Timanfaya National Park, in which a 65-year-old woman died and three people were injured, occurred on the route that "usually only the buses circulate" that make the route of the Mountains of Fire. The car was about "30 meters from the road", according to the same sources.
The vehicle ran off the road on a curve and overturned around 1:30 p.m. The car belonged to a rent a car from a company on the island.
The Cabildo has indicated through a statement that, according to witnesses of the accident, "the vehicle left the parking lot at high speed and, although the reasons that could have led the driver to enter the route are initially unknown, the possibility of a brake failure is being considered".
Due to the problem in the brakes, "the car could not stop despite the fact that one of the guards warned him to stop." "The car entered the road and when taking the first of the curves it fell into the volcano area, down a slope of more than 5 meters high", the first institution pointed out.
As a result of the accident, a woman of about 65 years of age has died after suffering severe head trauma, subsequently entering cardiorespiratory arrest. The other three occupants (a 68-year-old woman and two men of 75 and 69 years old) had contusions of various consideration.
Personnel from the Civil Guard, Civil Protection, Firefighters, Local Police of Tinajo, Canary Emergency Service and personnel from the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism went to the scene of the accident. The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés, on behalf of the entire Island Corporation, has deeply regretted this serious accident and has conveyed "his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim".
